What could be more evocative of the Deep South than shuttered and curtained windows? You don't have to live in a hurricane-prone area of the country to appreciate the beauty and functionality of storm shutters. Then add some final touches: furniture with graceful curves and curls, just the right fabrics and accessories that add that certain je ne sais quoi to the quintessential Deep South boudoir à la Française.

The silver-leafed armoire provides not only storage space for entertainment electronics but also display space for collectibles.
    Project time: 2 hours

    Materials
    Shutters
    Fabric
    Curtain rods
    Brackets and rings
    Light fixtures
    Sconces

    Steps

    1. Start by measuring the width of the shutters and the width of the windows. Be sure to take into consideration that the shutters will be mounted inside the window frames.

    2. Transfer the measurements onto the wall and using a level, draw a plumb line.

    3. Rest the shutter on the windowsill. Since we know the window is framed with studs, there is no need to predrill or use wall anchors. Line up the shutter with the plumb line and screw into the stud.

    4. Add curtains above the shutters to fall on either side of them. First determine the placement of the brackets and mark; then predrill and screw the brackets into place.

    5. Thread the fabric onto the rod and then install the rod into the brackets.

    6. Finally, attach the finials to the end and adjust the curtains.

    7. A French curlicue bed is dressed with a matelassé bedspread and three pillow shams. Embellished pillow shams in a variety of fabrics and sizes add volume and color to the bed. A burgundy organdy throw completes the lush look.

    8. Nightstands that are both traditional and elegant yet light in feel accent the windows.

    9. Nightstand lamps have graceful "feminine" curves and are capped with silk-and-crystal shades.

    10. Tall candlestick lamps give light to the dresser.

    11. Battery-operated candle sconces flank a painting.

    12. "Curly" iron benches with silk cushions sit at the foot of the bed.

    Total project time: 9 hours.
