    Figure A
If you have furniture that doesn't fit with your new decor, you can often change the pieces to fit the new look rather than buying new pieces. Here Nancy Golden demonstrates how she aged a pair of white dressers (figure A) with the addition of a patina effect.

    Project time: 3 hours

    Materials
    Paint and brushes
    Wood stain
    Hardware
    Screws
    Drill
    Mirror

    Steps:

    1. Remove existing hardware.

    2. A contrasting satin-based paint is applied over the silver base coat applied during the prep phase. Lightly brush the paint over 90 percent of the surface, painting with the grain of the wood and allowing areas of the silver finish to show through the paint (figure B).

Note: Brushstrokes will show with metallic paint, so you may want to consider using a spray paint if you prefer a smoother look to the finish.

    2. To create an aged appearance, use a cotton cloth to remove some of the paint (figure C). Be warned, though: this will get messy, and you'll need to change cloths frequently. Allow the surface to dry for about an hour.

    3. To further embellish the surface, apply a dark stain over the paint and then wipe most of it off. Using the bristles of the brush, fleck the stain randomly over the dresser.

    4. Predrill for the knob holes and install the hardware (figure D).

    5. To create the look of a more substantial piece of furniture, the dressers are placed side by side with a large mirror centered atop them; the mirror sits on the dressers instead of hanging from the wall.

Time spent so far: 7 hours.
