    episode WDC-310

Electronics in a bedroom can be unsightly; the solution is to hide them in a great-looking piece of furniture, like this armoire. It gets a bit of panache with the addition of silver-leaf panels and new hardware. The silver leaf is applied to the front panels; the color mimics that used for the lettering on the walls. (Silver-leaf packets are available at art-supply stores and cost $5 to $10 a packet.) The leaf adds an elegant, expensive-looking Old World finish to the armoire.

    Project time: 2 hours

    Materials:
    Silver-leaf sheets
    Brushes
    Painter's tape
    Sanding block
    Spray adhesive
    Protective sealer

    Steps

    1. Tape off any areas that should be protected from the sprays and the silver leaf.

    2. Sand down the finish on the panels with a sanding block. Roughing up the finish will give the silver leaf a "toothy" surface to hold on to.

    3. Spray the surface with metal leaf adhesive and lay the silver leaf on the panels in an organic, random fashion. Using a paintbrush, you can apply it for a smooth finish or with the wood surface showing through, for an antique, rubbed-off look. The paintbrush will also ensure a good bond.

    5. If you end up with blank patches, continue layering on the silver leaf until you achieve the look you want.

    6. Apply a spray-on sealer; let dry according to package directions before applying a second and a third coat.

    7. When the surface is completely dry, remove the tape and add new hardware.

Time spent so far: 4 hours.
