Just because a young man is still living at home, he doesn't have to settle for a space that lacks personality. Nancy Golden shows how, in one weekend, she changed a teenager's bedroom from dull to dazzling with a metallic paint treatment, edgy accessories and lighting -- and a headboard that really rocks.
- This makeover is rated intermediate.
- On a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 indicating the highest degree of difficulty, it rates a 4.
- The project took 11 hours over the course of two days.
- The estimated cost to complete the entire family room project is $2,000.
After creating a computerized room plan, Golden had to get some preliminary tasks accomplished before the weekend. First she base-coated the walls and furniture with a warm caramel color and let it dry completely. By the weekend it would be ready to accept the metallic treatment she was going to apply. She chose an eggshell finish because it has a bit of sheen and a little "slip" to it. Finally, Golden took careful measurements of the room -- as she points out, you have to have good measurements, or you might as well not start a project. Expert tip: When measuring alone, tape the end of a string to one wall, pull it taut and cut or mark it at the other wall. Then it's easy to measure the string with a ruler or tape. Tip: Always clean walls and furniture with soap and water before base-coating.
Metallic Paint (figure A)Project time: 3 hours. Materials (general): Paint and brushes Paint trays and tape Screws Screwdriver Tape measure Materials (painting project): Metallic paint Brushes Shelves Steps 1. Make sure to tape off the ceiling before beginning; with this technique you can't use a brush to do the edging, so you must be able to apply the roller right up to the ceiling. Golden didn't tape off the trim because she is going to paint the trim with the same metallic paint so the entire room will blend. 2. Using the metallic paint as if it were a glaze, apply the metallic paint in a random pattern with a 1/4"-nap roller. You want the base coat to show through in places. Tip: If you aren't satisfied with the line the roller leaves, consider adding a small painted crown molding to finish the look. 3. Paint the furniture with the same base coat and metallic paint to blend with the room for the monochromatic look. Expert tip: Think of color as an extension of your color, your accessories ? things that already make up your home. Time spent so far: 3 hours.
