A boxy 10'x10' bedroom with no outstanding features isn't the most inviting guest room in the world, so Nancy Golden steps in to turn it into a warm, inviting Victorian-inspired retreat. She shows how to liven up the walls with the addition of soft-pink paint and trompe l'oeil panels; then she adds comfortable overstuffed ottomans and decoratively painted furniture to complete the transformation.

Setting Up the Project
First Golden makes a computer floor plan of the room and all the furnishings (figure A). Then comes the important step of doing the prep work so everything's ready for the finishing touches to be added over the weekend. There are four jobs that have to be done in advance: paint the walls with a base coat of blush pink and let it dry thoroughly; take accurate measurements of the room and the windows; and apply a base of latex paint to the headboards and let it dry.
