Nancy Golden shows how she transformed a spare bedroom (figure A) into a chic, sassy dressing room and a personal retreat (figure B). On a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the greatest degree of difficulty, this project rates a 3. It took 13 hours over two and a half days to complete it, and the total cost for materials and accessories was $500. The first step in any type of project of this sort is to measure the room carefully and construct a floor plan sketch (figure C) either by freehand or with a computer program. Materials: Paint Paintbrushes Painters tape Paint roller Paint tray Glaze Plastic buckets Rubber gloves Cloth rags Caulk Hammer Level Nails Wood Saw Butcher paper Unfinished base cabinets Scissors Chalk Cork Batting Picture frame Fabric Decorative knobs Trim Screws Preparation: - Tape off molding, trim and floors with painter's tape.
- Paint base coat onto walls.
- Allow to dry overnight.
Texturizing the Walls Once the base coat has dried, Golden plans to add some texture to the walls with a decorative sponge roller (figure D). She uses a latex glaze mixture (3 parts glaze to 1 part latex paint) when applying the texture to the walls. The latex glaze mixture is one shade darker than the base coat. Tip: Since glazes can be messy, it's a good idea to use rubber gloves when working with this medium. - Practice the application technique on a sample piece in order to make sure the texture (figure E) and pattern is the one desired.
- Apply the latex glaze mixture to the walls (figure F).
Expert tip: Decorative painter Kelly Keener suggests that when working with glazes to keep a 3' wet edge for a consistent pattern. The final result is a rich, texture-filled room that creates the basis for a great space.
