Interior designer David Herchik strikes a perfect balance of masculine and feminine in his design for a master bedroom, adding romantic touches to the room without making it feel overly feminine. In planning a decorating scheme that will satisfy both male and female sensibilities, it's important to have the right mix of masculine and feminine objects. David Herchik has done this by balancing straight, clean masculine lines with soft, feminine silhouettes. The color of the master suite is predominantly buttery yellow, a mellow hue that appeals to both men and women. Pale-yellow wallpaper with a leaf pattern is considered a floral, but with its pattern of green leaves twined around angular white iron fencing, the paper appeals to both sexes (figure A). A king-size bed, raised to provide storage space underneath, is set away from the wall to accommodate a shelf for books and nighttime necessities. The clean lines and unfussy style of a cream-colored matelasse coverlet keep the bed's size and placement from overpowering the room (figure B). A chaise longue has the right balance of masculine and feminine, with soft, rounded curves that are feminine yet contemporary. Dark, masculine furnishings, such as a dark wood desk, are balanced with white French antiques that give the room a romantic feeling without being too feminine. Low lighting softens the room and lends an air of romance. The room's light colors reflect the lamplight, making it bright enough for reading and relaxing yet mellow enough to be romantic.
