If you love the look of plantation shutters but find them to be too expensive, you can get a plantation-style look by installing 3-inch-slat wood blinds. As Golden explains, these are ideal for a bathroom since they won't hold in moisture like a fabric window treatment. Here the louvers are actually 3 1/2 inches, giving the room a soft, contemporary feel (figure A). When the shutters are open, they allow more light to infiltrate the room; closed, they provide complete privacy.

When choosing bathroom accessories, the key to a perfect finished look is to be selective and "edit" your accent choices. Keep in mind that bath accessories should be both decorative and functional. Here they include:

    • Fench milled soaps (figure B) in shades that complement the honed marble.

    • Decorative vanity containers to hold bath essentials, including cotton balls and swabs (figures C and D).

    • A vase with dried branches to add a natural touch (figure E). This natural element is also echoed in a container of river rocks that matches the color palette of the room.

    • A decorative clock (figure F).
