    • Golden has chosen to paint the vanity (which was primed earlier) a shade of sage green to complement the wallpaper (figure A).

Tip: When painting cabinets, make sure to paint with the grain of the wood and use quality paint tools; this will help ensure smooth, professional-looking results.

    • Turned legs, available in most home improvement centers in a variety of sizes and shapes, are attached to the vanity toe-kick with wood glue.

    • To complete the vanity, Golden accents its drawers and doors with elegant bronze knobs (figure B).

    • Now Golden is ready to grout the tub tile; she's selected a custom-blended, smoke-colored grout (figure C) which will nicely complement the shadings of the honed tile.

Tip: Though grout comes in a variety of colors and can be mixed to almost any shade, be careful choosing grout with a high contrast to the tile itself -- this can sometimes create a checkerboard effect around the tile rather than a blended look.

    • When mixing grout, follow the manufacturer's instructions; the application consistency should be close to that of peanut butter -- in other words, it needs to be able to hold a peak. Generally, it's better the grout be slightly too thick than too thin.

    • Apply the grout mixture with a rubber grout float (figure D). After scooping up each portion of the mixture, Golden applies it at a 45-degree angle, using pressure to push it into the crevices around the tile (figure E). As the grout dries, it will lighten in color.

    • Once the entire area is grouted, Golden uses a damp sponge to wipe away the excess from the surface (figure F). Once a slight haze appears on the tiles, she polishes them using a soft rag.
