Golden plans to create a clean, sleek and contemporary look with the horizontal stripes. As with any painting technique, it's a good idea to create a sketch of the technique (figure A). The darkest color will be featured at the bottom to create a trompe l'oeil effect with the ceiling. She will be using three shades of metallic paint and two shades of base paint, in addition to the base color already on the wall.

    1. Measure the desired height from the ceiling for the first stripe and add tick marks (figure B).

    2. Connect the tick marks with a level to create a straight line on the wall (figure C).

    3. Add painters tape underneath the pencil line to section the wall into segments.

    4. Repeat steps 1-3 for each stripe segment desired.

The metallic paint mixture, beginning with the bottom stripe, should be as follows: a dark latex plus a dark metallic; a dark latex plus a medium metallic; a medium latex plus a medium metallic; and a pearlescent metallic plus the base coat. Golden will work with two of the four segments (first and third in this instance) at a time.

    5. Apply paint with a roller (figure D), making sure to paint in the same direction (Golden prefers to paint downward). Allow wall to dry overnight.

    6. The finished segments (figure E) of the wall already add a refined and contemporary look to the bathroom.
