Nancy Golden demonstrates a few ideas for livening up the kids' bathroom even further.

    Cabinet Knobs

The cabinet knobs were original to the house -- and very boring (figure A)! Golden decided to keep them but jazz them up with a few spots and stripes.

To make leopard-spotted knobs, first paint a few sloppy brown dots of regular craft paint on the surface (figure B). With black paint, add three smaller dots around each larger one (figure C).

For zebra stripes, use black paint to apply "nervous" stripes to each knob (figure D).

She also suggests that those who lack (or think they lack) the artistic skills to paint their own designs use small ready-made stencils to decorate knobs or, alternatively, that they simply remove the knobs and add.new ones.

The original towel racks -- ugly chrome bars attached right to the mirror -- were removed and towel rings were attached to the front wall for convenience. Monogrammed towels, each tied with a second towel of a different color, were hung from the rings, conveniently placed for the children's washing up (figure E).

To help the children be organized (and to disguise an old, unused heating grate), Golden created a wall-hung pocket system (figure F). Made of three contrasting fabrics (and suspended from another hand-painted zebra-striped knob), the system is attached to the wall with hook-and-loop tape and keeps combs, brushes, and other grooming implements handy yet out of the way. Golden suggests that a similar idea can be tried with a shower curtain if you don't have a large enough wall space in your bathroom.
