Divide a large space without altering its open quality with a versatile, portable room screen. Nancy Golden, host of DIY Decorating & Design, creates a handsome room divider from a three-paneled folding photo screen fitted with colorful pieces of stained glass. Materials:
Folding photo screen Pieces of stained glass in a variety of colors Self-lubricating glass cutter Glass nippers Clear silicone caulk Black marker Paper and pencil A quarter to draw rounded corners Protective gloves and goggles Clean rag or paper towel - Draw a plan showing where each piece of stained glass will fit in the screen.
- Remove the photo templates from the photo screen, and trace around each one on a piece of stained glass (figure A).
- Put on gloves and protective eyewear. Use the glass cutter to score along the lines drawn on the glass, pressing the cutting edge down on the glass and cutting away from yourself (figure B).
- Break the glass into pieces by lining up each scored line with the edge of a table and snapping the pieces apart along the line (figure C).
- Draw rounded corners on the glass, using a quarter as a template. Round the corners of the glass by removing the excess glass with nippers (figure D).
- Put a line of clear silicone caulk around the edge of the window in the folding screen (figure E), and slip the glass in place. Seal around the edges, front and back, with a line of caulk, and wipe away the excess with a rag or a paper towel.
- Install each piece of glass using the same method until the entire screen is filled.
