Note: Michele Beschen's clock used 16" x 16" tiles. If you build this clock using 12" x 12" tiles, alter the wood sizes to make a 12" square frame.

• Build a frame for the clock using the four pieces of wood. Lay out the wood so the thickness of the frame is 3/4" with the 16" pieces at the top and bottom and the 14" pieces on the sides. Line the pieces up flush to create a 16" square frame.

• Drill a hole through the wood in each corner and secure the frame together with drywall screws (figure A).

• Position one of the tiles over the frame. Use a sharp utility knife to cut out a square in the center of the tile large enough for the clock mechanism to fit through.

• Remove about an inch of the protective backing from the adhesive at the outer edges of the tile (figure B). Line the tile up and stick it to the frame (figure C). This is the back side of the clock.

• Add a sawtooth hanger at the top of the back for mounting.

• Lay out the second piece of tile and drill a hole in the center large enough to accommodate the hand mechanism (not including the hands) from the clock kit.

• Assemble the clock mechanism according to the manufacturer's instructions (figure D), installing it on the second tile.

• Remove the backing from around the edges of the tile and secure it to the frame.

• Seal the edges of the clock with vinyl or electrical tape.

• Install a battery, set the time and hang it on the wall for a swanky timepiece that is sure to get noticed (figure E).
