Table MatMaterials
Two types of fabric: one for show and one for backing purposes
Sewing machine
Complimentary colored thread for sewing machine
1. Determine the dimension of the table mat by measuring the table length and width. The dimensions should allow 10" of exposed table surface on all sides.
2. Trim the fabrics to size (make sure to leave enough material on all sides for seam allowances).
3. Place the two types of fabrics on top of each other. Fold the backing material face up and the show fabric face down, then pin in place. In our case, we selected a brown microsuede for the top and a silk for the backing material.
4. Once the seams are pinned together, sew a standard hem around the mat using a sewing machine. We chose a tan thread to subtly highlight the edges of the mat.
5. Finally, place the mat on your table and enjoy!
Sisal Rug Border
Materials
Sisal rug
Heavy fabric (ppholstery-weight, tapestry or ultrasuede fabric type)
Hem tape or fabric glue (optional)
Sewing spray-on adhesive
Yarn
Tapestry needle
Safety alert: Use spray adhesive in a well-ventilated area to avoid breathing the fumes. Follow any safety precautions on the label.
1. Cut four strips of fabric, measured to fit around the perimeter of the rug. To determine the width of the strips, select the border width you desire. Double the border width so the material can be folded and permit for seam allowances. The length of the strips should also overhang the edge of the rug by 1/4" to allow for folding the corners under.
2. With four strips cut, finish the edges by sewing them under. Simply sew a hem using a sewing machine or, as an alternative, use hem tape or fabric glue to create clean edges.
Tip for sewing sisal: To make the sewing process easier, use a square cut from a rubber rug-stabilizer or shelf-liner to make the needle easier to grab and pull through the heavy rug and fabric.
3. To attach the fabric to the rug, use spray adhesive, lightly spraing the fabric.
4. Place the rug on the center of the strip.
5. Fold the fabric over the edge of the rug and press down firmly. Repeat the process for the next piece, carefully attaching and smoothing out the fabric.
6. Miter the corner by folding the end of the second strip under.
7. Flip the corner of the rug over and miter the facing corner by folding in the opposite way -- reversing the order of the folded fabric corners.
8. Once all four of the strips are attached, dress up the fabric with some heavy yarn stitching. Use a heavy-duty tapestry needle and a yarn that matches one of the colors in your pattern. For our rug, a running cross-stitch was used.

Stretched canvas of desired size
Scissors
Staple gun and staples
1. Pick a fabric with an interesting or distinctive pattern.
2. Buy a stretched canvas at your local crafts store according to the size you want the wall art.
3. Cut fabric to fit the canvas, adding 1/2" on each side to staple to the back of the canvas.
4. Stretch the fabric over the canvas and staple it on the back. Start stapling in the middle, working your way to the corners and alternating sides as you go. Miter the corners.
5. Trim the excess fabric.
