Actress Tippi Hedren is the quintessential Hitchcock heroine: cool, elegant and blonde, hinting at mystery and -- yes -- a touch of danger. In Hedren's case, however, the danger comes not from within but from without: she lives at Shambala, an 80-acre haven for endangered, exotic big cats. Not that she feels threatened: the residents of Shambala, while in no way considered pets, are her friends, and she is their protector. Hedren's love of the wild is reflected in the decor she prefers: everything has a touch of the exotic, in furniture, fabrics and accessories. Achieving such a look is an ongoing process, she explains: you're constantly on the lookout for new additions to your collection. One image that is repeated throughout her surroundings is the elephant, inspired primarily by Timbo, the rescued elephant who lives at Shambala. Carved elephants guard the entrance to Malaika Marquee, the guest tent on the grounds, and pachyderm motifs abound. The table at Malaika Marquee, set for a dinner a deux, reflects the African theme (figure A), with its animal-print dinnerware and place mats, the profusion of fresh flowers -- and of course, elephants (figure B)!
