    The Finishing Touches

Once the mosaic bar top has dried overnight, the grout must be added to finish the look. Grout comes in a variety of colors. Golden uses a prepasted one for this project.

    1. Carefully remove the spacers.

    2. Using a grout float, apply the grout to the bar top on an angle (figure A). Grout floats have a spongy surface that allows the grout to be worked into small crevices.

    3. Wipe the excess grout from the tiles with a wet sponge (figure B).

    4. Continue to use the grout float until the grout is level with the tile.

    5. If a haze forms on the tile, use a damp rag to wipe away. This is where the tile's shine comes from.

    6. Allow the grout to dry overnight and seal with a grout sealer. Be sure the grout is completely dry and follow the manufacturer's directions regarding which sealer to use.

Continuing the cool, waterlike colors in the room, Golden adds new slipcovers:

      The homeowner's chair (figure C)

      The sofa (figure D).

After finding some napkins within her chosen color scheme, Golden uses them to make pillows for the sofa.

For the kitchenette window treatment, Golden uses a shower curtain hung with the grommets facing upside down. She used the same napkins that became the sofa pillows as ties for the window treatment to create the appearance of a Roman shade (figure E).

To create a worn look on the newly painted kitchenette cabinets, Golden sanded them with heavy-duty sandpaper (figure F) and changed the hardware (figure G).

For the final window treatment at the French doors, Golden again uses shower curtains, this time with nautical rope wound through the grommets (figure H), and the same napkin material for the hems (figure I).

      Grout Information:

      • The thickness of your joint will determine if you can use sanded or unsanded grout. Less than 1/8" use unsanded. Wider than 1/8" inch use sanded.
      • Always put water in your pail first, and then add the powder to prevent clumping.
      • You want a toothpaste or mayonnaise consistency for grout.
