Placemats often replace tableclothes in today's casual home decor. Mitered corners create a finished appearance and elevate these placemats to designer elegance. For a coordinated tabletop, the same technique can be used to create table runners.

Interior designer Linda Lee creates mitered corner placemats with professional looking results. This project, Lee says, is for the intermediate-advanced level crafter.

    Materials:

    Sewing machine
    Fabrics in contrasting patterns
    Matching thread
    Iron
    Ruler
    Fabric pencil or chalk
    Scissors
    Double-faced baby flannel
    Point turner

    1. Begin by cutting a placemat panel and backing of desired length. Measure long and short sides of the panel. Add about 4" of length to each measurement and cut strips to this size (for 2 long and 2 short).

    2. Then, take the long strips and place it face down on the center panel with seams even. Sew strip and panel together 1/4" from the outer edge (figure A).

    3. Open and press seam flat (figure B).

    4. Repeat technique for one of the shorter pieces, then fold the placemat so that right sides of the long and short trim strips are together (figure C). Use hands to press flat.

    5. Next, place ruler along the diagonal line created by the fold. Mark the corner where the two strips meet with chalk or fabric pencil.

    6. Sew along the line to create the mitered corner. Cut excess fabric away to within 1/4" of the seam.

    7. Press the corner.

    8. Repeat for the additional corners.

    9. Layer baby flannel between the finished front and backing. With right sides in, sew along edge of trim with 1/2" seam allowance. Snip corner.

    10. Turn the placemat inside out so that right sides now face outward. Use point turner to expand corners.

    11. Stitch the placemat closed to finish.
