Nancy Golden shows off the accessories she chose for the bathroom: - Mirrors framed in bright white (figure A) with attached candleholders (can be used to hold potpourri if preferred)
- Rattan soap dish, bamboo mug to hold hand towels, zebra washcloth (figure B)
- Zebra soap dispenser (figure C), which whinnies when the top is pressed
- Photos of the children wearing safari hats
- Bath towels embroidered with "Monkey Business"
- Woven rugs in natural fibers
- Decorative ceramic tiles hung on the soffits with plate hangers
- Trio of green wooden boxes, used in unusual ways: turned upside down on vanity as a ledge to hold glass containers of cotton balls, Q-tips, etc. (figure D); as a container for books; turned upside down to serve as a footstool. (Tip: To create a safe surface for climbing to reach the countertops, cut a piece from a non-slip floor mat to fit the top of the stool.)
Golden shows how the children decorated the ceramic tiles themselves, using foam stamping blocks. - Clean tiles with soap and water, then with an alcohol-dampened cloth.
- Squirt paint colors that you'll need onto a paper plate and use a brush to suggest the ground and grasses, etc., on the tile.
- Use a sponge applicator to spread paint on the stamping block.
- You may want to practice this step on paper first. Apply the painted side of the stamp to the tile, being careful not to wiggle it. Lift it off in one motion. Any bare spaces in the design can be touched up with paint.
- Let dry 4 to 6 hours, then apply 2 to 3 coats of clear polyurethane to protect the finish.
The tiles can be framed or hung without frames (figure E). You can use plate hangers to secure them to the wall.
