The ribbons used can be the same pattern and color or, if you prefer, each ribbon can be different. Varying patterns seem to work best, however, when all are similar or coordinating colors. If you're using wired ribbon, be sure to remove the wire before weaving.

    Figure A

Miki Canddle of Ruban et Fleur creates a woven ribbon pillow with a designer look.

    Materials:

    18" pillow form
    3/4 yd. fabric
10 pieces of ribbon, all cut 19" long and varying from 5/8" to 5" wide
    48" grosgrain ribbon (1/4" wide)
    Scissors
    Pins
    Needle
    Thread
    Fabric marking pencil

    1. Cut one square piece of fabric (for front of pillow), 19" x 19".

    2. Cut two pieces with dimensions of 19" x 9 1/2" for the back.

    3. Begin placing ribbons on the front fabric piece. Weave the ribbons together (figure A) and pin each around outside edge of fabric (and along the width and length of ribbon as necessary to hold in place).

    4. Baste around outside edge of fabric to secure ribbons. Follow basting with a blind stitch to hold ribbons and fabric together.

    5. Sew a 1" hem on each of the two pieces of back fabric. (The hem should be positioned on one of the long, 19" sides.)

    6. Cut grosgrain ribbon into 4 pieces. Attach 2 pieces to each part of back (near the hem), about 6" from each side.

    7. Overlap two hemmed pieces so that each side is 19" long. Pin overlap.

    8. Place back over front, right sides together. Pin and sew 1/2" seam around the entire perimeter.

    9. Turn sewn fabric and insert pillow form. Tie grosgrain ribbon into bows for the closure.
