Linoleum block printing is similar to woodblock printing, which originated in second-century China. Craft expert Kathi Cardinalli demonstrates how this ancient look can be duplicated with a minimum of time, effort and expense. Materials: Pen or marker Linoleum block (linoleum glued to a block of wood) Wooden boards and screws Tracing paper Linoleum-cutting tool Printer's ink Brayers - Begin by creating a wooden device that will safely hold the linoleum block and prevent injury during the carving process (figure A). Screw three pieces of wood together to create a right angle (two sides should an inch thicker than the linoleum block, with one flat piece for bottom).
- Next, trace desired design into linoleum block.
- Use linoleum-cutting tool to slowly and carefully carve traced design into the wood block (figure B).
- Apply ink to brayer and roll brayer onto carved block, coating well.
- Place paper over inked block and press. Using a clean brayer, roll over the design.
