Nancy Golden highlights some of the accessories she used in the bedroom makeover.
Along one wall of the room, to coordinate with the rattan loveseat and chair, she inverted two wicker baskets and turned them into a coffee table, accenting them with a stack of leather-bound books and a bronze bowl holding potpourri and a candle.
On the loveseat she placed a warm chenille throw and more pillows made from the accent fabrics. Directly above the loveseat she hung a print of hot-air balloons -- the balloons' striped pattern works with the striped fabric, and their curves mimic the curve of the chair back). The chair is of natural-color rattan. Golden points out that the shape of the balloons and the chair back further unifies the room's many curves: its rounded corners, edges and soffits.
For an end table she uses a counter stool topped with an arts and crafts style lamp, its amber shade providing a warm glow in the corner of the room.
Against the stone wall she placed a pair of cherry ladder shelves filled with candles, books, brass monograms and photos to bring action to that part of the room.
The stone is too bumpy for a mantel, so Golden used carved black corbels instead. They can be used to hold candles, photos or seasonal decorations. She placed an iron arts and crafts fire screen in front of the fireplace; its curved top and vertical bars reflect the balloon design, and the dark iron adds weight and contrast against the rock.
In the reading corner (Golden's favorite part of the room), a heavy red chair and ottoman, worn from use, provide comfortable seating when combined with a soft chenille throw and a large pillow covered in the accent stripe. Another lamp in the arts and crafts style casts ambient light for glare-free reading.
The bed area has been rendered cozy and inviting, with its soft duvet, chenille throw and luxurious pillows. The bed's headboard is a built-in shelf, so the windows above the bed act as a surrogate headboard: the matchstick shades combined with a soft swag of the statement fabric frame the head of the bed, and a pair of arts and crafts lamps warm the area visually. Golden points out that any number of cherished items -- photos, candles, etc. -- can line the shelf at the head of the bed and further personalize the space.
On the wall beside the bed Golden has placed several framed prints -- which turn out to be wallpaper samples matted and mounted in cherry frames. They hang next to the drapery panels sewn from the statement fabric and hung on a heavy iron rod to fall on either side of the matchstick blinds.
