    Figure A

Artist Naomi Kobrin shows how to make a fringed upholstered toilet seat for a decorating surprise that'll catch your guests off guard (figure A).

    Materials:

    1/2 yard of fabric
    White glue
2" to 3" paintbrush for spreading glue
    Hot-glue gun
    Polyester batting for padding seat
    Fringe
    Scissors
    Screwdriver

    1. Unscrew the toilet-seat lid from the seat.

    2. Both the top and the bottom of the lid will be covered with fabric. Place the lid on the fabric, and trace around it twice, adding about a 1" seam allowance to each fabric template. Cut out the fabric pieces.

    3. Polyester batting will form the padding for the seat. Put the lid on a piece of polyester batting, trace directly around it, and cut it out.

    4. Turn the toilet-seat lid upside down, and squirt white glue on the underside of the lid. Spread the glue evenly with a brush.

    5. Place one piece of fabric face down, and center the glue-covered seat bottom on it. Turn the seat over, and smooth the fabric in place. Fold the hem over the edge of the lid; hold in place with hot glue.

    6. To glue down the batting, squirt glue on top of the toilet-seat lid, spread evenly with the brush, and hold the batting in place.

    7. Center the top piece of fabric face up on the batting-covered seat. Fold the hem to the inside, and hot-glue in place at four points to establish the placement of the fabric. Hot-glue the entire hem inward.

    8. Finish the seat by hot-gluing an edging of fringe all around it.

    9. Reattach the finished lid to the toilet seat by screwing it back in place.
