    The best time to get a ferret is when he's between 6 and 8 weeks old.

    Ferrets, members of the weasel family, are related to minks, skunks and badgers.

    Ferrets are one of the oldest domesticated animals. Egyptian mummies have been found buried with them. In fact, the Romans used the ferret to ferret out rabbits.

    Personality

    • Friendly

    • Mischievous

    • Playful.

    Note: Ferrets love toys and may steal things such as keys.

    Physical Characteristics

    • Short legs

    • Short tail

    • Elongated body.

    Care and Maintenance

    • Clean the cage once a week.

    • Wash the pillows and hammocks once a week.

    • Ferrets can be trained to use a litter box.

    • Use a harness when walking your ferret, or he may make a dash for freedom!

    • Female ferrets will hemorrhage and die if not mated. So be sure to have your female ferret spayed.

    Training Your Ferret

    • Be consistent in your method and train every day

    • Reward with a treat.

    • If your ferret disobeys, pick him up by the scruff of the neck for a few seconds.

    Note: Ferrets are not for small children. They may bite if handled roughly.

    Buying a Ferret

    • Pet shops are a good place to buy your ferret.

    • At the time of purchase, your ferret should be weaned and on solid food.
