Many household plants can be toxic to pets. Be familiar with plants that can be dangerous, so you can avoid having them within reach of curious dogs or cats. Here are some very important safety tips for pet owners.
- Diffenbachia, a.k.a. Dumb Cane, produces sap from the leaves and stem that can burn the mouth and irritate the skin of pets.
- Philodendron is a common houseplant. It produces an irritating milky sap if the leaves or stem are broken.
- Phothos is another very common houseplant. This plant can be very toxic if ingested.
- Lilies -- of any type -- are especially dangerous to cats. If ingested, they can cause kidney failure, which may be fatal.
- Puppies and kittens -- as well as rabbits and guinea pigs -- should be watched closely around all houseplants as they tend to chew on any plant the encounter.
- If you suspect your pet has been effected by a toxic plant, determine the type of plant and the amount consumed, then contact your veterinarian immediately.
