  • Pets Quick-Tip: Pills and Oral Medications
  • From "Ask DIY"
    episode ADI-411

It can be a tough job to get your dog or cat to take its medicine. Here are some suggestions that may help make the process easier:

    • To get your pet to swallow a pill, try first giving him or her a tasty treat -- one that he doesn't get often. A piece of hot dog or cheese are good options.

    • Next, hide the pill inside a treat. If you're using a piece of hot dog, simply slice the piece open slightly and slip the pill inside. For cheese, simply wrap a piece of sliced cheese around the pill.

    • If applying liquid oral medications using a dropper, be sure and wipe of the outside of the dropper after the liquid has been drawn up inside. In that way, your pet won't be able to taste medicine on the outside of the dropper.
