Can you see the rabbit? Its long hair is used to make angora sweaters.

There are over fifty different breeds of rabbits ranging from very tiny with short hair to very large with long ears. The modern domestic rabbit came from Europe.

    Types

    • Mini Rex

    • Ruby Eyed Dwarf

    • Holland DwarfNetherlands Dwarf (smallest)

    • English Angora-the hair is sheared and used for angora sweaters

    Notes:

    • Rabbits are affectionate and love to be petted.

    • They are very low maintenance, but rabbits with long hair should be combed.

    Rabbit Food

    • Rabbit pellets should be rationed for adults, because they have a tendency to become obese.

    • Raw vegetables are a treat, but introduce them slowly or your rabbit may get an upset stomach.

    Rabbit Essentials

    • Cage lined with timothy hay 24/7--Cages should be kept out of drafts, away from predators and out of the weather. They should be kept where there is shade, because rabbits are vulnerable to heat and can get ill if they are not cooled properly.

    • Mineral wheel for extra vitamins, but this is not necessary if a proper diet regimen is followed.

    • Rabbit food -- Limit pellet use and combine them with fruits and vegetables. Contrary to some reports, dark leafy greens can be apart of a rabbit's diet. The timothy hay (used for cage liner) also is an excellent source of nutrition. It prevents gastrointestinal statis, which is a serious problem for rabbits on a low-fiber diet.

    • Pumice stone or pine cone to keep teeth worn down

Note: Cedar shavings are NOT a proper bedding/litter liner to use for rabbits because they are known to cause changes in their liver enzymes. The full effect of this change on the health of the rabbit it not known yet.

    LitterTraining

    • Put the litterbox where your rabbit normally deposits its urine or pills.

    • Be consistent!

    • A spayed or neutered rabbit is easier to train, because they are not as concerned with marking their territory.

    • If your rabbit confuses its food dish with the litter box, empty the soiled food into the litter box. Clean the dish and the rabbit will soon know the difference.
