African bullfrogs are the second-largest frogs in the world.

Frogs are great pets for children -- they require little maintenance and are fun to play with!

    Frog Characteristics

    • Bulging eyes

    • Strong hind feet used for hopping

    • Smooth or slimy skin.

    How to get started

    • A 10-gallon aquarium with a lid is suitable for most frogs. The larger sizes will need a bit more space.

    • Frogs need moisture, so line the tank with sphagnum moss.

    Varieties

    • Leopard frog

    • Wood frog

    • Tree frogs (found around the house)

    • The white tree frog has suction cups on its feet that allow it to jump from leaf to leaf.

    • The horned frog is native to Brazil. Its horny exterior may frighten predators; it will bite if disturbed.

    • The African bullfrog, one of the biggest frogs in the world, is capable of eating rats and mice.

    Notes:

    • Frogs have a very good sense of hearing.

    • Frogs appear wet because of glands that secrete mucus.

    • They live between 4 and 15 years in captivity.
