Many hobbyists find tropical fish and the tranquility of their environs to be both mesmerizing and relaxing.

Marc Grover, tropical-fish and acquarium expert, says a local acquarium shop can serve as a "school" for interested hobbyists. Grover advises hobbyists to learn as much as possible about the types of fish they find interesting. Tropical fish come in two varieties: freshwater and saltwater, but they are all brightly colored, with an exotic appearance. Freshwater tropical fish are recommended for beginners because they are easier to care for. Additionally, it's crucial that the types of fish chosen are compatible -- herbivores mixed with carnivores only creates aquatic chaos! Beginners can get started for only a few hundred dollars. Grover recommends a 20 -gallon tank that can grow with the hobby. Most acquariums need a heater, pump, air-line tubing and a bubble wand. Water conditioners remove chlorine and other pollutants from tapwater. Finally, decorative rocks and gravel complete the initial investment. After that, hobbyists need only to invest in new fish and keep a supply of food and water conditioner on hand.
