  • German Chalet Doghouse
  • From "Barkitecture"
    episode DBAR-204

    (Continued from page 1)

Barkitecture takes you to Germany...or, at least to a German-inspired doghouse!
    11. From the same center mark, measure up 19" to mark the center of the top of the door. Now, draw an arched line that connects the end of these lines with the mark at 19". Cut along the lines.

    12. To create the back wall, cut two sheets of 3/4" plywood to 23x55. Miter one 23" side of each at 45 degrees to form the back corner.

    13. To create the front wall, cut two sheets of 3/4" plywood to 23x11. Miter one 11" side of each at 53 degrees.

    14. For cutting the front roof, cut two sheets of 3/4" plywood to 40-1/4 x 33. Along one long side, measure 11-1/2" from the edge. Draw a line up 4-1/2". From the end of this line, draw a line parallel to the edge across to the opposite side, ending 4-1/2" from the corner. Cut along these lines.

    15. Make a mark 25" from the 33" side along the edge of the cut you just made, and then draw a line diagonally from this point to the upper corner. Cut along this line at 33-1/2 degrees to create an inside miter.

    16. On each sheet, miter one of the long sides at 26 degrees on the opposite side from the inside miter.

    17. Cut two sheets of 3/4" plywood to 59x34. Miter the 59" side at 26 degrees. On the opposite edge, measure 40-1/4" and make a mark. From this mark, you need to draw a line to the opposite corner. Cut along this line at 33-1/2 degrees to create an outside miter.

    18. To assemble the house, attach one gabled wall to the floor with 1-1/4" wood screws. Drive the screws up through the floor into the bottom edge of the gabled wall. Countersink all screws flush with the wood surface.

    19. Attach one of the front walls to the gabled wall by screwing through the front wall into the edge of the gabled wall and into the edge of the floor. Repeat for the second gabled wall and the front wall.

    20. Attach the back walls by screwing through the back wall into the edge of the floor and gabled wall (figure B). Screw the back walls together at the mitered rear corner (figure C).

    21. Level and attach the back roof panels (figure D) by screwing them to the edge of the back and gabled walls.

    22. Cut the 24" diameter cylinder to 43" long with the jigsaw fitted with a metal-cutting blade. Now you should set the cylinder in place to touch both front walls (figure E).

    23. Mount a laser pointer to a piece of 3/4" material, so when it is slid along the surface of the gabled walls and the back roof sections, it will project a point where the front roof panels will intersect the cylinder. Mark the cylinder where the laser hits the cylinder every inch or so, and then connect these points (figure F). Cut along this line with the jigsaw.

    24. Attach the front roof sections. Add a strip of wood to the inside of each panel where they contact the walls to help align the roof panels. This will support the weight of the panels and ensure a good fit. Once the roof is attached, you are ready to set the cylinder in place. Screw through the cylinder into the roof and walls to attach it.

    25. Caulk all the seams, and then paint the house as desired. Shingle the wood roof according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    26. To apply exterior decorations, cut 1-1/2 x 1 material to size and taste and attach the material with finish nails. Now you can paint the material a contrasting color to set it off from the rest of the house, and your dog's chalet is complete.
