  • Constructing the Dog Shade Structure
  • From "Barkitecture"
    episode DBAR-110

    (Continued from page 1)

    6. Use a jigsaw to cut out the notches for the uprights (figure F) and then install the floor, pre-drilling pilot holes and using the composite material screws. Be sure to leave about a 1/8" – 1/4" between the boards to allow for drainage (figure G).

    7. Cut four pieces of the L-material to 20" to be used as the uprights. Insert them into the four corners where you notched out the floor boards (figure H).

    8. To make the gables for the roof, trace a design onto a piece of 10" wide composite board (figure I). Once you have the layout of the gable created, use a jigsaw to cut out the design. You can use the first gable as the template for the second one.

    9. The roof stringers, that will go between the front and back gables, are made from 3"x1" composite material. Cut three pieces to 36" with the miter saw. Attach one piece.

    10. Attach the stringers to the top of the uprights from front to back.

    11. Next, attach the gables to the ends of the structure and to the outsides of the ends of the uprights.

    12. The third stringer is then attached between the top and center of the gables (figure J).

    13. The roof of the structure is made from a heavy gauge, waterproof, outdoor material. The design is completely up to you. Starting with a piece that is 44"x37" use a sewing machine to hem about 1/2" onto the edges of the material (figure K).

    14. Use stainless steel upholstery nails to secure the fabric in place on the structure.

    15. Finally, drill a hole on either end of the center of the ridge of the roof. Insert a finial into both holes for decoration (figure L).

    16. The final shade structure looks great (figure M)!
