    Constructing the Dog Shade Structure

    1. The material for this project is a composite, recycled material (figure A). It can be purchased at your local home store. Using the L-shaped material, to build the base of the shade structure, cut two pieces to 36" and two pieces to 30". To make these cuts ,use a miter saw cutting 45-degree miters into each end (figure B).

    2. Use a corner clamp to assemble the base frame of the structure. A corner clamp is a clamp that holds the two pieces of material at a 45-degree angle (figure C).

    3. For this material, use the special screws that accompany the composite material (figure D). They are threaded on the bottom of the screw with a wider thread and at the top of the screw with a finer thread to minimize "mushrooming" of the material (that is when the material mushrooms up around the head of the screw). Always drill pilot holes first.

    4. Once the frame is assembled, measure the dimension of the frame and cut the floor planks to length on the miter saw.

    5. Lay out the pieces of the flooring material. On the two end pieces that cover the corners, use a piece of the L-material to trace the points that need to be notched for the upright legs (figure E).
