Using a ramp helps aging dogs enter and exit a vehicle.

Beagle HealthBeagles can develop breathing problems quite easily. There are noises to look out for. If the noise is an outward coughing sound, that could be a problem with the dog's trachea or lungs. If the sound is an inward noise, that is called a reverse sneeze and can be a sign of your dog having tissue in the back of his throat that sticks together. He is trying to get it unstuck. If this problem persists, you will need to see your veterinarian. Because beagles tend to gain extra weight, help them get along by using a harness on them. To further aid beagles, as they get older and heavier, use a ramp to aid their entrance and exit from the car. This can really save the wear and tear on their back not to mention yours.

Older dogs should visit a vet once or twice a year.

Aging DogsWith all the improvements in veterinary medicine, dogs are living longer. With aging, come changes. If you have an older pet, you may have noticed they do not see, or hear as well...maybe they are putting on weight or having trouble getting up? There are ways to slow down the aging process. Have your dog on a good plan of nutrition. Older dog's joints get stiff, so good exercise will keep their muscles healthy. Also, older dogs should see the veterinarian once or twice a year. The vet will take blood tests for liver, kidney or any other organ problems. If an issue is detected, your vet may prescribe medicine or a change in diet. Lumps and bumps are common as dogs grow older. Non-serious, fatty tumors are called lipomas, but others could be quite serious. If you feel a bump, see your vet immediately to have it checked out.
