  • Introducing Oreo and Casey
  • From "Barkitecture"
    episode DBAR-112

    PHOTO

    Oreo and Casey are homebound.
When it comes to cute, these little guys are always cuter in pairs. Oreo and Casey have big plans for when they get out of the shelter. Now, it’s time for those plans to take shape. They have been under the care of the folks at the shelter, but it’s time to say goodbye and get started with their new lives. These plans include unconditional love, and of course, a beautiful and unique new doghouse. It’s all here in this episode of Barkitecture.

    Oreo and Casey

Oreo and Casey have been together at the animal shelter since they first arrived. The thought and hopes of them being adopted together were pretty slim...until the Brown family showed up and made their dreams come true.

Dr. Karen Tobias and Kenny Alfonso are on deck to help the transition from shelter to home a little easier on Oreo and Casey. Dr. Karen will offer the Browns some tips on healthy snacks...not just for eating, but for helping to train as well. She will also give advice on the right dog food for their stage of life. Kenny will build the dogs a funky and functional doghouse.

Jill and Adam Brown saw Oreo and Casey in a pin together, and when neither could decide which of the pair they wanted, they decided to take them both home. Dr. Karen says the Browns may have to deal with a little territorialism and suggests the Browns buy two bowls to feed them individually. The Browns think that the dogs are a terrier/pointer mix. Dr. Karen thinks it’s a great idea to have mutts, because with their hybrid vigor, they are much more likely to remain healthy.

It’s important to remember that animal shelters are full of animals, but also full of people giving of themselves for the good of those animals. As a prospective new pet owner, you should really consider adoption as your first course of action. Even if you are looking for a specific breed, chances are the shelter has those as well.

    Doghouse Plans

As Kenny decides what type of doghouse he will build, he thinks on Oreo and Casey's histories. Oreo had a family, but was surrendered over to the shelter. Casey was found wondering the highways. Both were lucky to find each other, and the Browns were lucky to find them.

Kenny decides to build the pair a travel trailer, or a camper. Since the doghouse will be for the both of them, it will have to be a doublewide! This home will help Oreo and Casey remember their homeless travels, before they got their new home with the Browns.

To build the camper, Kenny will need plywood laminated with sheet aluminum for the sides, more aluminum for the roof, an easy to remove floor for cleaning, tin for the back porch and of course...a ball hitch!

    Barkitecture Tidbits:

    • The tallest breed of dog is the Irish Wolfhound; the male dogs can reach 34 inches tall at the shoulders.

    • The smallest breed is the Chihuahua. It ranges from six to nine inches tall.
