  • Pets Quick-Tip: Treat Toy
  • From "Ask DIY"
    episode ADI-505
    advertisement

Bored dogs are unhappy dogs, but you can help relieve their boredom by giving them toys that they'll enjoy. Here's a suggestion for a toy that provides kibble-treats as well.

    • Take an empty clear-plastic soda-bottle, and make X's on the outside of the bottle with colored masking tape.

    • Drill holes in the X's using a drill bit that will create holes about 1/3 larger than the size of the kibble bits you intend to use.

    • Cover any sharp edges on the holes using small bits of masking tape.

    • Add dry kibble dog-food, and/or other favorite treats such as cheese cut into small cubes, to the inside of the bottle.

    • Shake up the contents, and let your dog play with the toy while the treats fall from the holes one by one.

    • Your dog will stay busy for quite a while trying to get the treats from the inside of the bottle.

    • Safety Alert: This toy is best suited for smaller breeds of dogs, and best used under your close supervision. Before giving your dog this homemade toy, make certain that your dog is not the large or strong enough to destroy and chew up the plastic bottle. Chewed plastic pieces, if swallowed, can cause serious injury to a dog.
