    Miniature Schnauzers originated in Germany. Originally they were bred to kill rats on farms; today they are one of the most popular breeds in America.

    Personality

    • Loving

    • Hungry for attention

    • Protective

    • Loyal

    • Adaptable

    • Stubborn

    • Intelligent.

    Note: These dogs are good watchdogs and will warn when strangers are around.

    Physical Appearance

    • Mustache, beard and bushy eyebrows

    • Dark oval eyes

    • V-shaped ears

    • Robust appearance (although small, they do not appear toyish).

    • Standard

    • Giant

    • Miniature.

    Colors

    • Salt-and-pepper

    • Black-and-silver

    • Solid black.

    Grooming

    • Groom daily; clip as needed.

    • Although this is a longhaired breed, they don't shed very much.

    Common Health Problems

    • Liver disease

    • Cataracts

    • Bladder stones

    • Skin problems due to flea and pollen allergies.

    The average life expectancy is 15 years.

    Note:

    • When looking for a puppy, find a reputable breeder.

    • These dogs make good pets but are not suitable for very small children .
