Sure, the Chihuahua may be tiny -- but he thinks he's the biggest dog on the block! Characteristics - Smallest of breeds (around 8" tall, as little as 2 pounds)
- Smooth or long coat
- Variety of colors (AKC accepts any color)
- Brown eyes (lighter eyes in lighter-colored coats)
The Chihuahua's country of origin has long been a subject of dispute: some say Spain, others Egypt, still others China. But what is known is that in the New World, the breed was discovered in the Mexican state of Chihuahua, close to the Texas border. Although they tend to be suspicious of strangers, Chihuahuas make great family dogs -- loyal, devoted, sweet and loving. They get along well with children, especially if they're raised around them from an early age. Despite their size, they make terrific watchdogs, thanks to their extremely sensitive hearing. Chihuahuas love attention and hate being left alone. They also adore being carried around, but they do need adequate exercise, as they can easily become overweight. Easy to train, they are one of the least destructive breeds and won't chew the furniture when left unattended. Care - Brush your Chihuahua's coat at least once a week.
- Brush his teeth frequently.
Health Concerns - Gum and tooth problems
- Corneal abrasions and ulceration
- Arthritis
- Open fontinelle (skull bones don't knit -- not a problem).
One final note: All Chihuahua puppies are adorable, but when you adopt, be sure to choose one who is alert and loving. Web site resources for Chihuahuas: American Kennel Club Chihuahua Breed Sheet from AKC
