    These dogs are great with kids, and one reason is because they rarely bite.

    Although springer spaniels were bred to be aggressive and independent, they are in fact unusually affectionate and patient.

    One of the oldest types of spaniel is the English springer spaniel. The breed's name comes from espanol, the French word meaning Spanish, and from the dogs' ability to jump and spring to flush out game.

    Personality Traits

    • Friendly

    • Loving

    • Eager to please

    • Likes people and craves attention.

    Maintenance

    • Feed once a day.

    • Brush coat frequently.

    • Walk daily or let play outside.

    • Bathe approximately every two weeks.

    Health Problems

    • Epilepsy

    • Dry skin

    • Eye inflammation and drainage (eyes should be checked daily)

    • Ear problems (alcohol drops used after bathing will usually prevent)

    • Ear mites.

    Color Combinations

    • Black or liver with white markings

    • Blue or liver roan

    • Black and white or liver and white with tan markings

    Springer spaniels, which are known for their endurance and stamina, make excellent watchdogs.
