Cocker Spaniels were originally bred to hunt game birds. By the 1940's they were the most popular dogs in the US. This led to indiscriminate breeding and temperament problems. Personality Traits - Extremes: aggressive and biting or calm and gentle
- Loyal
- Affectionate
- Playful
- Easy to train
Note: Responsible breeders will know of the dog's temperament. Colors - Solids such as black, cream, red, and brown
- Parti-colors-white is dominant then red or black patches
- Tan point-tan markings must be 10% or less of the dog's coat to qualify for shows.
Cocker Spaniels require regular trimming and grooming. Their coat should look natural and neat. Health Problems - Ears must be kept clean because they are prone to ear infections
- Cataracts, glaucoma, and inflammation of the eyes
- Exercise is necessary or they may become overweight, nervous, or aggressive.
Note: Average life expectancy is 12 to 15 years. What to Look For - Ears smell good (means no infection).
- No runny eyes.
- Two sets of shots.
- At least eight weeks old.
- Check the puppy's relatives and ask for a health certificate.
Note: Call the American Spaniel Club or American Kennel Club for a reputable local breeder. Web site resources for Cocker Spaniels: American Kennel Club information on the cocker spaniel A site dedicated to the cocker spaniel
