Dalmatians have a long history with fire stations: Before sirens, they were used to clear the way for the truck, and at a fire, they would guard the horses. The British called them coach dogs, because a dalmatian would often run beside his master's carriage. Personality Traits - Adaptable
- Good with kids
- Either relaxed or high-strung
- Need companionship
- Intelligent
- Need exercise -- like to run.
Note: Dalmatians are better for bigger kids -- they may accidentally knock little kids down. Physical Characteristics - Spots (come in a variety of sizes and grow in as dogs mature)
- Strong muscles
- Very sturdy
- Their are two head types: boxer (compact) and slender (long-nose).
Color Types - Black (dominant and most popular spot color)
- Liver (recessive, not as common)
- Other colors such as lemon and tricolor are rare.
Health Problems - Skin problems
- Deafness
- Blindness.
Notes: - Overbreeding can lead to unpredictability. Be careful of the breeder and lineage.
- The average lifespan is approximately 11 to 13 years.
- Dalmatians generally weigh 45 to 70 pounds.
