Poodles keep their playful puppy style even after reaching maturity.

Poodles were trained originally as hunters. They were taught to retrieve their hunter's prey, especially from the water. In fact the name "poodle" comes from the German pudelin, which means "splash." Poodles respond well to commands and are easy to train.

    Notes:

    1. Interview the breeder and owners to determine the history of line.

    2. Poodles are generally anxious. If the personalities of the owner and the dog don't fit, it may not be a good relationship.

    3. Poodles are great with children, but they need to be trained from puppyhood.

Grooming a poodle does not have to be a lot of work. Most will look fine with a shorter style. Professional groomers can make them look fancy for shows.

These dogs need a lot of attention, but they will return it many times over.
