  • Quick Tip: Pets and Digging
  • From "Ask DIY"
    episode ADI-205
    advertisement

If your backyard looks like an archeological dig, there are ways to discourage your dog from digging, say Ask DIY Pet Care Experts Stephanie Zielinski and Joel Tatum. One idea comes straight from the kitchen cupboard: a mix of black, white and cayenne pepper. Sprinkle the potion on your dog's favorite digging spots and it will make him sneeze -- and stop coming around. Of course, some breeds of dogs just really like to dig, and you're going to have a tough time discouraging them from their instinctive behavior. The best solution for those breeds is to find an area of the yard your dog can call her own. Dig a hole there and bury some of the dog's favorite toys inside. You may have to get on your hands and knees and dig around a little to demonstrate for the dog, but then she'll probably catch on.
