Well-behaved cats probably didn't start out that way. It takes patience and perseverance and to discourage bad feline behavior such as jumping on furniture or chewing on the belongings of their human cohabitants. Here are suggestions for discouraging bad habits like these.

    • Fill an empty aluminum drink can with coins. When you catch your cat red-handed in an undesirable behavior, shake the can. The rattling sound is unpleasant to cats, and chances are she'll stop what she's doing.

    • Citrus scents and bitter apple are useful for keeping cats from certain areas and discouraging chewing. Cats dislike the smell of citrus, and can't stand the taste of bitter apple. Both are available from pet stores.

    • If your cat keeps jumping on a piece of furniture where you'd prefer she would not go, try putting down strips of double-stick tape on their favorite perching location. Cats don't like the sticky feeling, and will be discouraged from coming back to the location where they've encountered it.
