Sharing your living space with a pet may be rewarding, but dealing with pet hair and dander can be a challenge and a frustration. Here are a few tips from Thayne Maynard of the Cincinnati Zoo.
- Pets kept indoors may shed in small amounts year-round, as opposed to just once or twice a year for those that live outside. This is due, in part, to a lack of constant exposure to seasonal temperature changes.
- The best way to control pet-hair from accumulating in your home is to start by brushing your pet at least every other day.
- Use a looped grooming brush or textured brushing mitten, available from pet-supply stores, to groom your dog or cat. Begin by brushing gently against the growth to remove dead hair. Then brush in the direction of the growth of fur to remove loose hairs. This activity will help to stimulate the production of natural oils in the skin to aid in giving your pet a healthy, shiny coat.
- A quick way to round up pet hair that's accumulated on your furniture is to use a lint-brush or adhesive roller. Use a looped metal brush to remove any hair from carpet that a vacuum cleaner can't pick up.
