It's important to choose the right tools for grooming your pet. Here are a few guidelines to help you:

    Dogs

    • Short-haired: a soft-bristled brush; helps remove dead hair and skin, distribute oils for a shiny coat.

    • Medium-length coat: a wire brush, or slicker; comb first, then brush.

    • Long-haired: shedding comb (to loosen matted hair), followed by a wire brush; finish with a regular brush.

    Cats

    • Long-haired: metal combs and brushes; help keep hair from matting.

    • Short-haired with dense coat: hard-bristled brush.

    • Sleek-haired: soft-bristled brush.
