    The national cat of France, the chartreux is an elegant breed whose distinctive coat is often compared to that of a chinchilla (figure A). This fur, which is actually a double coat, is water-repellent and sheds very little, and with his sturdy build the chartreux is a good cat to have around children (figure B).

    Because the breed is fairly uncommon in the U. S., breeders have tried to strengthen the bloodlines by importing cats from France. To assist them in their efforts, there is a chartreux database that they can access before breeding individual cats in order to check their bloodlines for any anomalies that might crop up.
