Veterinarian Cynthia Stringfield discusses two common cat health problems: ringworm and respiratory infections. Ringworm isn't a worm at all: it's a fungal infection of the skin. It's highly contagious: you can get it from your cat, and your cat can get it from you. The symptoms you want to look for are hair loss and flaky skin, especially in a circular pattern (hence the name "ringworm"). If you notice anything suspicious, take your cat to the vet. And be aware of any symptoms that may appear on you or members of your family who may have handled the cat. Upper respiratory infections can strike cats of all ages. The symptoms are similar to those of a cold in humans: - Runny eyes
- Sneezing
- Loss of appetite
- Stuffy nose
- Tendency to hide
Be good to your cat: seek veterinary assistance at the first sign of illness. Feline Lifespan If you plan to let your cat go outdoors, keep in mind the following life-expectancy statistics: - Outdoor cats: 2 to 3 years
- Indoor cat: well into teen years
If you must let your cat out, it's a good idea to accompany her and then bring her back inside. Some good accessories for your cat include the following: - Breakaway collar
- I.D. tag
- Bell
- Harness and leash
Remember, the best thing we can do for our pet cats is to have them spayed or neutered. There are too many unwanted kittens in the world already: don't add to the problem.
