Family portrait: The Smiths are human, canine, feline and avian -- and all heart.
|
Lesley Smith and her husband are good Samaritans who have taken in many lost and abandoned pets over the years. Lesley believes that animals in distress know how to find humans who will help them, and she says that with the exception of the rare creature that has been too abused to trust anyone, such animals are generally grateful and bond with their rescuers. The Smiths' first rescue was Ralph the dog, who showed up while Lesley was away on business -- and who was an undisputed member of the family by the time she arrived home. Since Ralph's arrival 11 years ago, the Smiths have taken in several more orphans. Currently the family comprises nine members: two human and seven furred or feathered. Lesley says that all the animals -- dogs, cats and a bird -- get along well; her theory is that a natural hierarchy exists in the household. She hopes her family is as large as it's going get but doesn't count on it: she knows that she has a soft heart and that there are always creatures in need waiting to find a safe, loving home.
