Pigeons take about two to three hours to find their way home during a race (which is usually only a couple of hundred miles), but their intelligence and instinct have allowed them to find their way over distances exceeding 500 miles.

Hobbyist Richard Borschdorf participates in pigeon racing but shares the hobby with his children. Borschdorf says the children are fascinated with the birds -- more than 60 of them -- and are developing a respect for life and for other living creatures through their participation in the pastime. During a race, pigeons are released hundreds of miles away from home. Each bird's leg is tagged with its age and the owner's name and address. Technology -- in the form of scannable tracking tags -- is now being used as part of some races. Borschdorf says the beginner can get started for less than $100 (to construct or purchase nest boxes, perches and a feedbox).
