Hobbyist Donna Crossley thinks free time is "for the birds" -- the different species that fill her home aviary, that is! Crossley says her aviary started as a simple hobby, but now caring for the birds takes up to 10 hours a day. Crossley's aviary is filled with many different species of macaws, parrots and pigeons that range in age from a few weeks to several years old. Some are trained to do tricks, while others are hand-fed. Crossley says beginners should take three things into consideration before engaging in the hobby: space, income and time. Apartment dwellers, Crossley says, shouldn't have larger birds (such as parrots or macaws) due to limited space. Caring for birds can also be time-consuming and expensive, as babies or birds will illnesses tend to need special formula and extra care.
