    Staked Tree Stand
How about a tree stand that will reduce the stress of trying to get your Christmas tree balanced once you get it home? You can buy these stands at many nurseries for less than $30. Workers at the tree farm actually drill the base into the tree, and then you can take it home and set it up in a snap. At the end of the holidays, unscrew the base and use it again the next season.

Here's a gardening fun fact your kids will love: this variety of Colorado blue spruce is also known as Fat Albert!
This is a great time of year to plant a live tree you can decorate in front of your home. Walter's favorite is the Colorado blue spruce, which can grow as tall as 40 feet.

    • Make sure you dig the hole twice as wide as the rootball and deep enough that the top of the rootball is slightly below ground level.

    • Even though you'll be planting late in the season, don't forget to water the tree slowly for the first few weeks.
